Have you ever been a victim of assault?

If you have or have been a listening ear to someone who has, you will idenfity with the story in 2 Samuel 12 & 13.

David had several children by his many wives. His son, Amnon had a different mother than his daughter Tamar, who was the sister of Absalom.

Amnon desired Tamar and plotted a wicked scheme to have his way with her. He succeeded in robbing her of her virginity, despite her protests. We call it rape.

In the culture of the time, he actually could have asked his father David if he could marry her and David would probably have given her to him as a wife.

However, lust does not equal love and when it attains that which it desires, it most often turns to hate.

So it was with Amnon.

His father David, had fallen into the temptation of lust and now Amnon has as well.

What a reminder to us as parents that our children will more often model our behavior rather than our words.

The difference between the two however, is that David repented and confessed his sin to God. If Amnon did, it was not recorded.

All we know is that Amnon ended up hating Tamar and removing her from his sight. He commits a despicable act, yet treats her as the despicable one.

Tamar in her despair confides in her brother Absalom, who just tells her to keep quiet about it and not make a scene.

It is not much different today. Cover up abuse, tell the victim to be silent and let’s move on.

Absalom however, comes up with a plan to get revenge on Amnon and kill him. He succeeds and David’s family begins to make the Kardashians look like the Brady Bunch.

David is grieved and no doubt, in typical parent form, probably is the hardest on himself.

It is a sad story of lust, rape, murder and grief all wrapped up in a mess of tragedy.

Lord have mercy. How very much we need Him.

“If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Genesis 4:7
