We must know where we have come from to know where we are headed.
As I move forward into the book of Deuteronomy, I see Moses reminding the people of those very things.
God has preserved his people and it is time to transition to the promised land.
The people are reminded over and over again that if they follow God’s commands, life will go well for them. Their God will take care of them.
If they rebel and tell God to butt out, then they will make a mess of things.
Moses explains that when a son asks his father someday as to what were all of these stipulations, decrees and laws that God has commanded about, that this should be the response:
“The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. And if we are careful to obey all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Deuteronomy 6:24,25
The bottom line is that it was all about their righteousness.
It never was about God wanting to rain on their party with a bunch of rules just to watch them squirm.
It was about them living upright and being a holy people that reflected a holy and just God.
They were to display His glory so the world would see that He is the one true and loving God. There is no one like Him.
Just as a loving parent sets boundaries to keep their children from harm, so does the loving God set up a system that would protect His children.
All of it was set up so that they could live as well and as good as possible in a messed up world. Order in the chaos. A guide for success.
The question for Israel remains? Will they follow or do life on their own terms, in their own way?
I have to ask myself today:
Where have I come from and where am I heading?
Who am I following?
