I love that God understands that we do not always understand Him!

He is limitless, we are limited.

So, even though His ways are not our ways, He gives us His word to find instruction and His Holy Spirit to guide us.

The book of James tells us that if we ask for wisdom, He will provide it.

I find in the old and new testament deep spiritual truths that need the spirit to discern, but also, practical advise given as a father would instruct his children.

In Deuteronomy 18 – 21, God continues to give explicit instructions for how Israel is to live in the Promised land.

Moses tells the people that God will raise up a prophet like him who will speak the words of the Lord to them.

Remember at this point, the scriptures were being fulfilled and they did not have a Bible like we do. Thus, the need for prophets.

This was a serious assignment and calling that was only given by God.

One didn’t presume to be a prophet, nor appoint himself. It was a God ordained assignment.

As we saw with Moses, it was an ordination that often bore heavy and unpopular responsibility.

We learn that if a prophet speaks something that God did not say or speaks in the name of another god, he is to die. Deut. 18:20

“Yikes!” What if they kill the wrong guy? What if they don’t get rid of a false prophet? How will they know?

The instruction follows:

18:22 “when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.”

God knew that deceivers would come and try to lead the people astray. What would stop someone from saying “thus sayeth the Lord” and trying to sway Israel for their own selfish gain?

As well, in our time, we need to be discerning.

2 Peter 2:1 “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them – bringing swift destruction on themselves.”

The people of Israel had to wait and see if a prophets words came true to know whether he was false or not.

We have the word of God to know and read so that we can detect whether or not someone is trying to lead us astray.

1 John 4:1-3 “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God; Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.”

John 16:13 “But when he, the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”

Praising God today for His word and His spirit that He so graciously provides that we can walk in truth.
